Rooted in wabi-sabi philosophy, this serene escape blends architecture and landscape for a slow, intentional stay. Hikari House is a thoughtfully designed modern desert home inspired by Japanese wabi-sabi principles, where simplicity, texture, and natural imperfection create a quiet sense of beauty. Clean architectural lines meet desert-worn materials, with plaster finishes, Shou Sugi Ban accents, and artisan-crafted details throughout. Expansive glass and a striking 20-foot bifold door dissolve the boundary between indoors and out, allowing natural light to pour in from every angle while framing panoramic desert views like living art. The home feels open, grounding, and deeply calming - ideal for rest, reflection, creative inspiration, and reconnecting with nature and one another.

-Outdoor Amenities-
Set across five acres of untouched Mojave desert, the outdoor experience at Hikari House is immersive and expansive. A private UV and ozone-filtered saltwater plunge pool sits at the heart of the property, with views stretching toward Copper Mountain and the surrounding boulder landscape. Gather beneath over 100-year-old olive trees for open-air dining, or unwind around the sunken conversation fire pit as the desert sky turns from gold to deep starlit black. Lounge areas are thoughtfully placed for both sun and shade, offering space to relax throughout the day. The property is surrounded by open desert, dotted with native plants and ancient rock formations, making it ideal for stargazing, slow mornings, and peaceful evenings. Expect glowing sunsets, crisp night air, and some of the clearest night skies in California.

-Living Area-
The living space is airy and expansive, designed for both connection and quiet retreat. High ceilings and full walls of glass create a seamless visual flow to the outdoors, while warm, minimal interiors ground the space. A 65-inch Frame TV and Sonos surround sound system offer modern comfort, while the open layout invites slow mornings with coffee and relaxed evenings after exploring. The atmosphere is calm and intentional, with carefully selected furnishings that balance comfort, design, and function.

-Kitchen & Dining-
The kitchen is a chef-forward, design-driven space anchored by a sleek island and high-end appliances. Outfitted with a Gaggenau refrigerator, Bosch 500 & 800 Series appliances, induction cooktop, convection oven, and thoughtfully curated cookware, it’s ideal for both casual meals and elevated dining experiences. A vintage 1970s custom bar sits just off the kitchen, fully stocked for cocktails, wine, and celebratory evenings. The indoor breakfast bar makes slow morning coffee easy, and outdoors, there are two separate dining spaces. The first dining area is on the back patio and the second, between two 100+ year old ancient olive trees - where you can enjoy meals beneath the olive trees while taking in the desert views. Perfect for shared meals, slow breakfasts, and sunset dinners.

-Bedrooms & Bathrooms-
Hikari House features three bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and two full bathrooms, thoughtfully designed to feel like private retreats immersed in the surrounding landscape. Each space balances comfort, texture, and natural light, with organic mattresses, bamboo linens, and a calming, design-forward aesthetic. Below are details on each sleeping space:

Primary Suite
A private desert retreat designed for comfort and inspiration. Wake to soft morning light through sliding glass doors and step into your sunrise-facing outdoor space. An antique limestone coffee table sits among California gold gravel and sage, with views of the open desert and boulders. Inside, the ensuite bath feels like a modern desert cave with dark plaster, Shou Sugi Ban accents, heated floors, and reflective windows that frame views while maintaining daytime privacy. A dedicated workspace and ample closet space add ease to the experience.

Desert Nest
A cozy, design-forward retreat with sculpted textured walls and wabi-sabi artwork. Located in a quiet pocket of the property, it offers views of sage, desert landscape, and ancient olive trees. The space shifts beautifully with the light, from softly sunlit mornings to a restful, cocoon-like atmosphere with blackout curtains.

Horizon Room (Attached Casita)
A private haven just off the front patio, wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glass. Wake to sweeping views of Joshua Tree’s iconic boulder landscape and unwind in a space designed for both immersion in nature and restful comfort, complete with blackout shades and its own mini-split AC and heating system.

The home includes two full bathrooms. One is light-filled with a skylight, creating a soft, spa-like atmosphere. The primary ensuite is more grounding and immersive, featuring dark plaster finishes, Shou Sugi Ban accents, heated floors, and a walk-in shower for a deeply relaxing experience.

-Surrounding Area-
Hikari House is set between Copper Mountain and the iconic boulder landscapes of Joshua Tree, offering a truly immersive desert setting. Visiting Joshua Tree National Park means hiking among surreal rock formations, exploring vast open terrain, and experiencing some of the most breathtaking sunsets in the region. The nearby towns offer a laid-back, artistic desert culture with local cafés, boutique shops, and unique dining experiences. From casual hangs to elevated cuisine, the area blends creativity, nature, and community. The landscape feels expansive and otherworldly, with wide horizons, sculptural boulders, and a quiet that invites you to slow down and take it all in.

Self check-in with lockbox. The entire house and property are yours to enjoy! Please note that there may be a few locked supply closets on-site used for housekeeping and owner storage.

A personal vehicle is necessary to get around in this area - rideshare apps are not guaranteed.

-House Configuration-
As mentioned above, the home features an attached casita - the Horizon Room - the third bedroom in photos. Access to the Horizon Room is just feet from the front door. Please note that this bedroom does not have an attached bathroom, so guests in this room will need to exit the room onto the patio and then go through the front door to use the hallway bathroom. We recommend always keeping the house key in the lockbox on the patio for this reason, so guests staying in this room can easily unlock the front door and access the bathroom during the night if needed. Please be sure your group is comfortable with this arrangement before booking!

-Primary Bathroom-
The Primary Bathroom features two mirrored, reflective windows that offer striking views and daytime privacy when it is brighter outside than inside. After dark, once interior lights are on, the reflective effect no longer provides privacy. A blackout shade is provided for the window facing the back patio; the shower window does not have a shade. Please be aware and notify members of your group of this if necessary for privacy.

-Pool Heating Fee-
Should you wish to have the pool heated to 85 degrees, please notify us in advance of your arrival as there will be a supplemental charge per day for this service due to high fuel costs in this area. If you'd like the pool heated for multiple days, we ask that days be consecutive to conserve energy, thank you! Pool heating is not usually necessary May through September. Please note that we will need at least 24 hours' notice to heat the pool.

During the winter months, please be aware that colder outdoor temperatures may cause the pool to feel cooler than its maintained temperature of 85°F. We kindly ask that you ensure this temperature meets your comfort level before submitting a request, as refunds cannot be issued on this basis.

-Pet Policy-
We welcome your dogs! There is a $100 per dog per stay fee, limit of 2 dogs maximum. Please note on your reservation if you are bringing dog(s) and how many, and we will adjust the price accordingly. There is an unauthorized pet fee of $1000. Please use the provided dog sheets before allowing your dogs on any furniture. Cats and other pets are not allowed.

-Wildlife & Safety-
The desert landscape is teeming with wildlife and natural beauty, offering a unique connection to nature, but it’s important to be mindful of the creatures and plants that call this area home. Guests may encounter a variety of wildlife during their stay, and while direct encounters with animals like coyotes, snakes, scorpions, bobcats, mountain lions and other desert dwellers are rare, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and to keep a safe distance from these creatures when spotted. Additionally, the desert is dotted with sharp cacti and other spiky plants. For your safety, always supervise children, pets, ESAs, and service animals while outdoors. Dogs should remain on a leash at all times and be watched closely while outdoors, as they can wander into potentially unsafe situations with wildlife or plants. By booking this property, guests acknowledge the potential for wildlife encounters and assume responsibility for their safety and the safety of their group. By respecting the local environment and staying aware, you can fully enjoy the magic of the desert.

-Security Cameras-
There are exterior camera monitoring the driveway for security and occupancy verification purposes. The locations are as follows: at the entrance by the dumpster, front corner (southeast) of the house, back corner (northwest) of the house, and on a standalone fence post in the distance on property line on northeast side of property. There are no cameras facing interior spaces or private areas such as the pool.

-Damage Waiver Policy-
Each reservation requires either a refundable security deposit or a non-refundable damage waiver

-Late Check Out-
Any unauthorized late check-out beyond the 15-minute grace period will incur a $100 fee for the first hour, with an additional $100 charged for every hour thereafter.
