BUNK - Bunker House

Bunker House has a secret beneath its sculptural midcentury exterior: an original underground bunker transformed into a private speakeasy. Set on 3.4 acres in North Joshua Tree, this one-of-a-kind desert home invites up to six guests to unwind in the hot tub, take in sweeping mountain views, and discover a more playful side of the desert after dark. The best part of the evening might just be downstairs.

There is something wonderfully unconventional about this home. Sweeping curves soften its bold architectural lines, while bright white walls, a richly textured wood ceiling, black finishes, and cognac leather furnishings create a warm, distinctly modern atmosphere. Arched alcoves, unexpected stairways, and original architectural details give each room its own character, making the house as interesting to explore as it is to settle into.

The layout encourages guests to make themselves at home. Spend an afternoon lounging with a record playing, gather around the dining table for dinner, or head outside to enjoy the open desert. With a garage game room, inviting outdoor spaces, and a remarkable underground hideaway, there is plenty of room for six guests to spend time together or find their own corner.

-Outdoor Amenities-
The outdoor spaces embrace the landscape, with rugged mountains on the horizon, wide desert skies, and a towering saguaro standing beside the pergola. With 3.4 acres to enjoy, there is room to spread out, take in the scenery, and experience the slower pace of Joshua Tree.

The six-person hot tub sits on a raised platform overlooking the yard, inviting long, leisurely soaks as the evening light changes across the mountains. Nearby, a round cowboy tub offers a refreshing place to cool off during the warmer months, from March through October. An umbrella provides shade, while a hammock offers another spot to relax.

When it's time for dinner, fire up the gas BBQ and enjoy an easy evening outside. Later, move to the wood-burning fire pit beneath the pergola, where the open landscape and night sky provide a memorable setting for conversation. The south-facing views stretch toward Joshua Tree National Park, adding a dramatic backdrop to time spent outdoors.

-Living Area-
Inside, the living room balances bold design with the kind of comfort that makes you want to stay awhile. A generous cognac leather sectional anchors the space beneath a beautiful wood-paneled ceiling, creating an inviting gathering place for the whole group.

Put on a favorite record, stretch out for a movie on the large smart TV, or settle into the lounge chair tucked beside the built-in arched shelving. The room's warm textures and understated artwork bring personality without distracting from the architecture.

For a change of pace, the garage offers a separate game room and workspace, giving guests another place to hang out or catch up on a few things between adventures. Please note that the garage game room does not have heating or air conditioning.

-The Bunker Speakeasy-
The home's most distinctive feature is hidden below ground.

Originally built as an underground bunker, this remarkable space has been transformed into a private speakeasy with an atmosphere entirely different from the rest of the house. A steep staircase descends into a dimly lit passageway, where a glowing neon sign hints at what lies ahead.

Inside, exposed block walls, industrial-style sconces, and a round skylight give the bunker its unmistakable character. A bar-height table and stools create an intimate gathering spot for late-night conversations, drinks, or a game of cards.

It's unexpected, slightly mysterious, and just the right amount of playful. Whether you're spending the evening with friends or showing the kids a part of the house they won't find anywhere else, the bunker makes the stay feel decidedly different.

Please note that access requires navigating steep stairs, and the bunker does not have heating or air conditioning.

-Kitchen and Dining-
The kitchen continues the home's confident design with sleek black cabinetry, dark appliances, original windows, and generous preparation space. It's a well-equipped, chef-style kitchen designed for everything from relaxed breakfasts to a full dinner with friends.

Start the morning with freshly brewed Joshua Tree Coffee Co. coffee, provided for your stay, and settle into the cozy bar nook while the rest of the house wakes up.

The adjoining dining area features a long table and bench seating against a white brick wall, creating a welcoming space to share meals and linger over conversation. With the gas BBQ outside, it's easy to alternate between cooking indoors and enjoying the desert air.

-Bedrooms and Bathrooms-
Bunker House accommodates up to six guests across three thoughtfully furnished bedrooms, each offering a comfortable place to retreat after a day in the desert.

The primary bedroom features a king bed, soft neutral textiles, and distinctive curved built-in shelving. Steps lead directly from the bedroom to the backyard, making it especially convenient to step outside for a little fresh air in the morning. The primary bedroom does not have an ensuite bathroom; the main bathroom, featuring a walk-in shower, is a short walk away through the dining area.

The second and third bedrooms each feature a queen bed with rich blue textiles. These two rooms share a connecting bathroom with curved architectural details and a striking dark-tiled shower, making them a convenient arrangement for friends or family traveling together.

All three bedrooms are located just off the dining area. An additional half bathroom off the living room features dramatic dark finishes, a round mirror, and pendant lighting, bringing the home's total to 2.5 bathrooms.

With its unusual architecture, inviting shared spaces, and secret gathering spot beneath the house, Bunker House offers a Joshua Tree stay that is as much about enjoying the property itself as exploring the desert beyond it.

-Surrounding Area-
Downtown Joshua Tree is close by for cafes, boutiques and the art community, and the Transmission sculpture by Daniel Popper and the park's West Entrance are just as easy to reach. Spend the day among the rock formations, then come back for one more round in the bunker.

The entire house and property are yours to enjoy! Please note that a few supply closets stay locked to store rental supplies.

Please note that a supply closet off the garage game room is locked and used for rental supplies. The bunker staircase is steep, so please take care.
